Theodore Gray is a big fan of the periodic table. He owns the domain and even owns a periodic table table. He is a coauthor of The Elements: A Visual Exploration of Every Known Atom in the Universe. Now he and several collaborators have published an interactive version of the book for Apple’s new iPad device. It is the best example of an interactive book I have ever seen. It makes Amazon’s Kindle seem as interesting as two lumps of coal in comparison.

The animations in Mr. Gray’s ebook were created using Mathematica, an application created by Wolfram Research, of which Mr. Gray is one of the founders, and which is a sponsor of his web site. An explanation of how the ebook was produced, in under 60 days, is given in Popular Science Apr 2010.
